11/09/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 8 September, the European Commission adopted a proposal (https://aeur.eu/f/idk ) asking the Council of the EU to authorise it to negotiate a new fisheries agreement with Gabon (see EUROPE 12895/25). The latest five-year implementation protocol came into force on 29 June 2021 and will expire on 28 June 2026. This protocol sets out the fishing opportunities granted to the EU fleet and the corresponding financial contribution. For the final year of application, the EU’s annual public contribution to Gabon amounts to €2.6 million, including €1 million for sectoral support. According to the Commission, replacing the current Fisheries Partnership Agreement would allow it to “better reflect changes to the CFP resulting from the 2013 reform, in particular better integrating sustainability”.
