On Tuesday 18 November, the European Commission opened registrations for the new commodities mechanism under the European ‘Energy and Raw Materials’ platform (see EUROPE 13673/33).
The aim of this mechanism is to bring together supply and demand for strategic raw materials - both current and future - and to encourage cooperation between companies, particularly through the pooling of demand, joint purchasing and investment consortia.
The platform will bring together buyers, suppliers, storage service providers and financial or investment partners from all European industrial sectors, including green and digital technologies, aerospace and defence.
The first matchmaking cycle will take place in the first quarter of 2026.
As explained in a press release from the European Commission, the trade negotiations themselves will take place outside the platform, without any intervention from the institution.
On 1 November last year, the Commission launched the first call for expressions of interest for the mechanism specifically targeting the production and purchase of hydrogen (see EUROPE 13751/21).
