On Wednesday 12 November, the European Commission launched the first call for expressions of interest under the new “Hydrogen Mechanism”, which aims to connect potential suppliers and buyers of hydrogen and its compounds (ammonia, methanol, aviation fuels and eMethane) within the EU.
According to the Commission, this Mechanism promotes market engagement and opens up new business opportunities by bringing together buyers and sellers “on an open and transparent platform”.
Suppliers are initially invited to submit their bids by 2 January 2026. The Commission will publish the call for expressions of interest on 19 January, together with anonymised information sheets on the bids.
A second phase, between 19 January and 20 March, will allow potential buyers to express their interest in turn. The results of the matching will be announced to participants on 31 March.
This Mechanism stems from the “gas” regulation adopted in 2024 (see EUROPE 13455/26), requiring the Commission to set up and operate, within the framework of the European Hydrogen Bank, a Mechanism to support the development of the hydrogen market until the end of 2029.
More broadly, it forms part of the new EU platform enabling European businesses to source energy and raw materials (such as natural gas and biomethane, which will follow), launched on 2 July (see EUROPE 13673/33).
