17/07/2024 (Agence Europe) – The directive and regulation comprising the ‘gas’ package were published in the Official Journal of the EU on Monday 15 July, and will come into force 20 days after publication. With an interinstitutional agreement reached on 28 November 2023 for the directive (see EUROPE 13302/7) and on 8 December for the regulation (see EUROPE 13310/5), the aim of this legislative package is to facilitate the transition of the European energy system towards the production, transport and distribution of renewable and low-carbon gases, in particular hydrogen. It also introduces non-binding limits on gas imports from Russia and Belarus and the creation of an independent entity for the planning of European hydrogen networks (ENNOH).
