EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT PLENARY / European parliament

European Parliament renews its College of Quaestors, which is devoid of far-right MEPs

At the European Parliament’s plenary session on Wednesday 17 July, MEPs elected five Quaestors who will be responsible for administrative and financial matters concerning MEPs and their working conditions for the next two and a half years.

Andrey Kovatchev (EPP, Bulgarian - 559 votes), Marc Angel (S&D, Luxembourger - 461 votes), Miriam Lexmann (EPP, Slovak - 459 votes) and Fabienne Keller (Renew Europe, French - 398 votes) were elected in the first round of the election.

Kosma Złotowski (ECR, Polish) was elected with 335 votes in a run-off against Pál Szekeres (Patriots for Europe, Hungarian). Mr Złotowski received only 260 votes in the first round of voting, whereas an absolute majority of 321 votes was required to be elected.

The European Parliament’s Bureau is therefore devoid of MEPs from the ‘Patriots for Europe’ and ‘Europe of Sovereign Nations’ groups. Three MEPs sitting in these groups were excluded on Tuesday, when the 14 vice-presidents making up the Bureau were elected, because of a ‘cordon sanitaire’ put in place by the pro-European political groups. (Original version in French by Bernard Denuit)
