13/11/2025 (Agence Europe) – The European Parliament approved the agreement with the EU Council on amending the mandate of the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) at its plenary session, on Thursday 13 November (see EUROPE 13746/33). This agreement, reached in May (see EUROPE 13644/11), amends the regulation to strengthen EMSA’s role. As a result, the Agency will be better equipped to help EU countries improve their maritime situational awareness in the face of new geopolitical challenges, such as the war in Ukraine, and to provide them with additional assistance in the area of maritime safety. EMSA will also focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from ships. Already adopted by the Council (see EUROPE 13729/35), the text will enter into force on the 20th day following that of its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.
