02/06/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 2 June, the European Commission announced that it had registered two new agricultural geographical indications: a French protected geographical indication (PGI),’Haricot de Soissons’, and a Turkish protected designation of origin (PDO), ‘Suruç Narı’. The ‘Haricot de Soissons’ is a dry white bean with large seeds produced in the department of Aisne. The department of Aisne has been known for its production of dried beans since the 18th century. The ‘Suruç Narı’ is a medium to large pomegranate with a red and pink rind against a predominantly yellow background, grown in the province of Şanlıurfa, in the lowest area of Turkey. Şanlıurfa is located in the ‘fertile crescent’, in a region historically known as Mesopotamia and where agriculture has a long history. (LC)
