02/06/2023 (Agence Europe) – The European Parliament has recognised the role that bacteriophages may play in the fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR), welcomed the PhageEU organisation on Thursday 1 June. The European Parliament had, in fact, adopted a joint resolution on the subject of AMR (see EUROPE 13192/13). “In a situation where the development of new effective antibiotics and new antimicrobial agents is a challenge, there is a need to develop and implement new incentives and look at alternative treatments such as bacteriophages”, explains PhageEU. MEPs called on the European Commission to prioritise an appropriate regulatory framework for registering bacteriophages both as feed additives and veterinary medical products, as they have “great potential” to fight AMR in animal husbandry, says PhageEU.
