More balanced and coordinated approach needed to harmonise efforts of EU Member States in dual transition of sector

The majority of Member States have made progress in the agenda’s priority areas of the green transition, digital transition and resilience, concluded the European Commission in its report on the implementation of the European Tourism Agenda 2030, published on Tuesday 16 December.

However, not all Member States have progressed in the same way. These disparities in progress underline the need for a more balanced and coordinated approach at local, regional, national and EU level. The Commission believes that “governance and policy frameworks is essential not only for aligning efforts across and within Member States but also for ensuring that tourism contributes meaningfully to the EU’s broader sustainability and digital transition goals”. It also believes that resilience needs to be strengthened in a number of areas.

The Commission has listed the main issues requiring further examination: - economy, resource efficiency and social sustainability across the tourism ecosystem; - tourism data and strategy integration; - crisis preparedness and response; - structural and financial support for small and medium-sized enterprises; - the role of intermediaries and fostering multi-stakeholder collaboration; - the visibility, coordination and uptake of EU skills initiatives for tourism actors.
