08/10/2025 (Agence Europe) – On 3 October, LR MP Josiane Corneloup tabled a motion for a resolution at the National Assembly (https://aeur.eu/f/iu6 ) calling on the French government to put pressure on the European Union to ban the keeping of laying hens in cages. The strictly national text has 32 co-signatories from eight parties (LR, RN, Renaissance, MoDem, Horizons, PS, Les Écologistes, LIOT). The resolution urges the government to take action with the EU and asks the European Commission to include the phasing out of cages in its 2026 work programme and to present a legislative proposal by 2026. On 30 June 2021, the European Commission undertook to present a legislative proposal by the end of 2023 to ban the caging of laying hens and other farm animals. This commitment followed on from the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) ‘For a new cage-free era’, which gathered more than 1.3 million signatures (see EUROPE 13713/18). (LC)
