On Thursday 22 May, MEPs approved the report by Antonio Decaro (S&D, Italian) on the omnibus text simplifying the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). The coalition of centre groups (EPP, S&D, Renew Europe, Greens/EFA) continues to have an effect: none of the amendments tabled by the ECR and PfE groups to further modify the CBAM were adopted.
The European Parliament as a whole stuck to the report approved by the parliamentary committee, which makes only a slight change to the European Commission’s proposal (see EUROPE 13639/31). The only adjustment is to exempt non-EU members of the European Economic Area, meaning Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, from the CBAM.
With this vote, negotiations between Parliament and the Council of the EU can begin. The Member States adopted their position on Wednesday 21 May and are due to confirm it officially on Tuesday 27 May (see EUROPE 13645/23). (Original version in French by Léa Marchal)
