In Pristina, Kaja Kallas urges Kosovo to break political deadlock and move forward on European path

Present in Pristina a few hours after her visit to Belgrade (see other news), Kaja Kallas, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, once again reiterated a message of optimism for Kosovo and its future in the Union.

EU enlargement is now a personal priority”, she said, welcoming the fact that EU membership is supported by a “large majority” in Kosovar society.

However, as in Serbia, the High Representative was keen to point out that progress towards accession is linked to “tangible and structural reforms”.

Speaking alone to the press in the absence of the Kosovar authorities, Kaja Kallas stressed the need for Pristina to “break the political deadlock”, elect a government and ensure compliance with the Ohrid agreements, in order to normalise relations with Serbia (see EUROPE 13643/27).

Some Member States believe that Kosovo has not yet fully complied with the Ohrid agreements and that the continuing tensions in the north run counter to this commitment. We need clear signals of de-escalation to be able to go further on our side”, she said (see EUROPE 13641/6). (Original version in French by Isalia Stieffatre)
