10/04/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 10 April, the European Parliament adopted by 441 votes to 139 with 41 abstentions the political agreement reached with the EU Council in February (see EUROPE 13354/3) on a European certification framework for carbon removals. This agreement aims to encourage the adoption of these technologies and to strengthen the EU’s capacity to assess, monitor and authenticate initiatives in this field to combat greenwashing. The legislation covers various forms of carbon sequestration, including permanent storage through industrial technologies, conservation of carbon in sustainable products and storage in the agricultural sector. The legislation must be approved by the Council and will then be published in the Official Journal of the European Union. It will come into force twenty days after its publication. (NP)
