Parliament affirms free movement of data between EU and US can only be authorised once "safe harbour" system guarantees adequate legal protection

Strasbourg, 05/07/2000 (Agence Europe) - With the adoption by a very slim majority (279 for, 259 against and 22 abstentions) of the report by Elena Paciotti (Democratici di Sinistra, Italy), the European Parliament brought into question the draft European Commission decision which recognises the relevance of the levels of protection provided for consumers and companies through the self-regulation principles of the US "safe harbour" system.
