Parliament approves a framework directive on water that is much stricter than the one foreseen by the Council's common position

Strasbourg, 17/02/2000 (Agence Europe) - As announced by EUROPE yesterday (page 10), the European Parliament adopted the report by French Socialist Marie Noëlle Lienemann on the framework directive on water. It considerably changed the common position of the Council which, on 22 October last, adopted a compromise that -according to the majority of the EP- waters down environmental standards while delaying the ensuing obligations for Member States.
