Commission confirms importers must pay customs duties on products not qualifying for zero duty (textiles from Bangladesh with false origin certificates)

Brussels, 13/07/2000 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission decided that European traders who import duty free textile products from Bangladesh accompanied by false origin certificates should themselves pay customs duties thus evaded. There were 5,000 certificates of origin issues by Bangladeshi authorities between 1994 and 1996 for textiles which, in reality, came from other Asian countries.
