Brussels, 13/07/2000 (Agence Europe) - The Convention, responsible for the drafting of the European Union's Charter of Fundamental Rights, progressed well this week. The part of the future Charter, dedicated to civil and political rights, is now closed, after the adoption of a compromise for the Article relating to children's rights and the provisions up to Article 30 concerning freedom of movement.
The works continued with the examination of economic and social rights. Along debate on Article 32 concerning professional freedoms and the right to work as well as other provisions brought the divergences of views to light, often linked to existing difference between the national social security systems. Compromise solutions must still be found.
The Convention will continue its work, next Monday, with Article 40 concerning migrant workers rights and equality of work. The structure of the Charter and a preliminary draft is also on the agenda of this meeting, which it is hoped will enable (with, if necessary night meetings) to finalise the first reading of the text as a whole.
