Differences between Commission and UN Secretary General over initiative to lighten debt - EU urges other industrialised countries to follow its example

Brussels, 13/07/2000 (Agence Europe) - The Commission has taken a threefold initiative relating to the lightening of the heavily indebted poor countries (HIPC initiative). It has:

a) urged the other industrialised countries to follow the EU example, which has decided to allocate over one billion euro to this initiative, thus becoming the foremost donor to the HIPC Trust Fund.
