For first time, Court imposes daily penalty on Member State (Greece) for failure to comply with previous judgement (environment)

Luxembourg, 04/07/2000 (Agence Europe) - For the first time, the Court of Justice has resorted to a hitherto unused Maastricht Treaty instrument. On a proposal from the European Commission, it imposes a penalty on Greece, to take effect from Tuesday 4 July. Greece must pay EUR 20,000 per day until it complies with a previous judgement by the Court.
