EU deplores sentences on Statkevitch and Shchukin, which could mean elections cannot be properly organised in Belarus

Brussels, 29/06/2000 (Agence Europe) - The Presidency has issued the following declaration on behalf of the EU: "The European Union deplores the suspended prison sentences imposed on 19 June on Mr Statkevich, Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, and Mr Shchukin. These sentences leave them at liberty, which the EU notes, but threaten to prevent them from participating in the forthcoming elections.
