Extension of qualified majority voting and enhanced cooperation are the politically defining aspects of negotiations, says the Italian Government

Brussels, 12/05/2000 (Agence Europe) - Having presented proposals on extending qualified majority voting (see EUROPE of 3 and 4 April, p.7), Italy has also handed the Intergovernmental Conference a more general paper on its stance over the review of the Treaty, in which it states that the revision of enhanced cooperation mechanisms "is, with the extension of qualified majority voting, another politically defining aspect" of these negotiations.
