07/10/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 7 October, the European Parliament approved, by 458 votes to 182 with 11 abstentions, the extension of the exemption of zero-emission heavy goods vehicles from road tolls until 30 June 2031. Already approved by the EU Council (see EUROPE 13707/45), this targeted amendment to the directive applies to both lorries and buses, and also covers user charges. MEP Jens Gieseke (EPP, German) criticised the opposition of the ECR, ESN and PfE groups: “Instead of giving the European car industry the support it urgently needs, they are losing themselves in pure hatred of electric mobility.” “As the EPP, we stand for openness to technology”, he added, while welcoming the outcome of the vote.
