European Commission refers Bulgaria to EU Court of Justice for incorrect transposition of right of access to a lawyer

On Wednesday 7 May, the European Commission decided to refer Bulgaria to the Court of Justice of the European Union for failing to correctly transpose into its national legislation the 2013 Directive on the right of access to a lawyer and to communicate upon arrest (https://aeur.eu/f/gp1), which forms part of the European legal framework on minimum standards for a fair trial.
