Irregular crossings at EU’s external borders down by 31% in first quarter of 2025, according to Frontex

Irregular crossings at the EU’s external borders fell by 31% in the first quarter of 2025 to almost 33,600, according to data published by the Frontex agency on Friday 11 April.

This fall was observed on all the main routes, with declines ranging from 64% along the Western Balkans route to 8% along the Eastern Land Border.

The Western Balkans recorded the biggest drop in arrivals between January and March (-64%). The Central Mediterranean also saw a significant drop in arrivals, with 8,500 irregular crossings in the first quarter of 2025, down 26% compared to the first quarter of 2024.

On the Channel route, the number of migrants attempting to reach the UK has fallen by 4% compared to 2024, with detections of just over 11,200.

The Eastern Mediterranean and West African routes are the most active. The Eastern Mediterranean was the busiest, with 9,630 arrivals between January and March. The West Africa route followed with 9,200 arrivals recorded over the same period, down 30% on the first quarter of 2024.
