The European Commission and the Arab Republic of Egypt successfully concluded negotiations on Egypt’s association to the EU’s research and innovation (R&I) funding programme, ‘Horizon Europe’, on Thursday 10 April. The agreement should be signed by November, with entry into force subject to final approval by both parties.
“Egypt’s association to ‘Horizon Europe’ will drive progress in key sectors like energy, food security and digital transition, creating new opportunities for innovation”, said Ekaterina Zaharieva, European Commissioner for Startups, Research and Innovation.
Transitional provisions will apply from now on. This will allow Egyptian entities to apply for and be treated as ‘eligible entities’ established in a country associated with ‘Horizon Europe’ with regard to calls implementing the budget from 2025 onwards. Once signed, the agreement will enable Egyptian researchers and organisations to participate on equivalent terms to those applicable to entities established in EU Member States. Egypt will be the second African country to be fully associated with ‘Horizon Europe’, after Tunisia.
