13/05/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 13 May, the spokeswoman for the European External Action Service, Nabila Massrali, expressed the European Union’s concern about post-election violence in Chad, following the victory (61% of the vote) of General Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, declared on Sunday 12 May, almost a week after the first round of the presidential election (see EUROPE 13407/36). While the losing candidate, Succès Masra, called on Sunday for the election to be annulled, the EU stressed “the responsibility of all those involved to lodge any disputes through the channels provided for in the Constitution”. Last Thursday, RFI reported automatic gunfire resulting in “at least a dozen deaths and injuries”. The Chadian press association had also expressed its indignation at a circular from the Ministry of Health forbidding hospitals to divulge information to journalists. (BD)
