13/05/24 (Agence Europe) – The European citizens’ initiative (ECI) ‘Save the Planet by shifting taxation from labour to greenhouse gas emissions’ now has six months to collect over one million signatures. The Commission has decided to register the initiative as legally admissible. Its organisers are calling for the targets in the ‘climate law’ and the ‘Green Deal’ to be amended to achieve climate neutrality by 2045 rather than 2050. To achieve this, they believe that the EU must, above all, remove the cap on the price of carbon under the Emissions Trading System (ETS). In their view, a substantial proportion of the revenue from the ETS should be redistributed to low-income households “by shifting taxation from labour to the consumption of non-renewable resources, strengthening the EU’s social climate fund”.
