European Commission proposes to negotiate new fisheries agreement with Greenland

On Monday 13 May, the European Commission adopted a proposal to authorise it to negotiate a new implementing Protocol to the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreement concluded with the Government of Greenland and the Government of Denmark, “which would meet the needs of the Union fleet”.

The current implementation protocol was provisionally applied from 22 April 2021 for a period of four years (see EUROPE 12685/30). It authorises the EU fleet to fish for cod, pelagic redfish, demersal redfish, Greenland halibut, shrimp, grenadier and capelin in Greenland waters for indicative annual fishing opportunities of 42,726 tonnes. Vessels from seven Member States (Germany, Denmark, Estonia, France, Latvia, Lithuania and Sweden) take part in these fishing activities.

In addition to the fees paid to Greenland by the EU fleet, the EU pays annual compensation of €13.6 million, plus €2.9 million to support Greenland’s sectoral fisheries policy.
