On Monday 13 May, to mark its fiftieth anniversary, the European Environmental Bureau (EEB) published a proposal for a new ‘Green and Social Deal’ in the run-up to the European elections in June.
“The European Green Deal was a starting point, catalysing part of the transformational change we need, strengthening the EU’s international credibility. (...)We should move further. Don’t stop now!”, said Patrick ten Brink, EEB Secretary General.
The EEB deal, drawn up in consultation with civil society and decision-makers in the Member States, calls on leaders to fully address the triple global crisis of climate, biodiversity and pollution, in particular by reducing resource use and seizing the opportunities of the circular economy.
It also calls for an acceleration in the development of an economy that protects the planet and promotes a just transition.
Finally, it calls for EU legislation to be enforced and for EU governance to be strengthened by appointing Commission Vice-Presidents to champion green and social issues, as well as a Commissioner for Youth and Future Generations.
