23/04/24 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 23 April in Strasbourg, Parliament validated the text resulting from the provisional political agreement of 6 March (see EUROPE 13366/8) on a new legal framework for the transfer of criminal proceedings between Member States. Approved by a very large majority (604 votes in favour, 2 against and 6 abstentions), the regulation would make it possible to avoid parallel proceedings for the same case by limiting prosecutions to the country best placed to take them. It defines common criteria for transfers and also ensures the protection of the rights of suspects, defendants and victims. This strengthening of European judicial cooperation is particularly significant in “investigations into cross-border organised crime”, according to the European Parliament’s rapporteur, Assita Kanko (ECR, Belgian).
