23/04/24 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday, 23 April, MEPs adopted (538 votes in favour, 32 against, and 31 abstentions) their position on the proposal for a regulation aiming to prevent plastic pellet losses and reduce microplastic pollution (see EUROPE 13374/14). The proposal demands that preventive measures be implemented and immediate action be taken to avoid pellet losses. Companies that handle more than 1,000 tonnes of pellets/year will have to draw up risk assessment plans. Clear labelling requirements on storage and transport containers will also be introduced and will include a specific pictogram as well as information regarding the danger of plastic pellets, their potential to harm the environment, and the need to prevent waste and collect any spills.
