23/04/2024 (Agence Europe) – In Strasbourg on Tuesday, 23 April, the European Parliament adopted (455 votes in favour, 99 against, and 54 abstentions) the interinstitutional agreement on the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) (see EUROPE 13307/4), which aims to introduce environmental sustainability standards for most products sold in the EU. The European Commission will define specific product requirements through secondary legislation. Priority products—such as iron, steel, textiles, and furniture—will be the first to be affected. Digital “product passports” will provide consumers with precise information enabling them to make informed choices when making purchases via a public web portal. Moreover, the regulation prohibits the destruction of unsold clothing, accessories, and footwear and could be extended to other product categories in the future.
