23/04/24 (Agence Europe) – Members of the European Parliament have approved (594 votes in favour, 7 against and 15 abstentions) the text resulting from the provisional political agreement reached by the Council of the EU and the European Parliament on 6 February on the deployment of high-speed networks in the EU (known as the ‘Gigabit Infrastructure Act’) (see EUROPE 13344/5). This regulation should provide the EU with a common approach to providing high-speed Internet access to every citizen, bridging the connectivity gap between rural and isolated areas and urban areas, and ensuring better coverage of transport corridors. The regulation must now be published in the Official Journal of the EU before it comes into force. (IS)
