12/04/2019 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 12 April, the European Commission approved a Spanish measure to support households that might otherwise have lost television reception due to a change in frequency. This change is in line with the 2017 decision of the European Parliament and the Council of the EU on this subject, which requires the 700 MHz band to be allocated to wireless broadband by June 2020, in order to allow the deployment of 5G mobile telecommunications services (see EUROPE 11690/10). This text provides that Member States may compensate for the direct costs incurred by users. The support, amounting to €150 million, will be granted to associations representing owners of multi-household buildings to carry out the necessary equipment changes. Considering that the aid would be limited to what is strictly necessary to achieve the objective pursued, the Commission has validated it in accordance with the EU State aid rules. (LT)
