Commission to decide whether to send letter of formal notice to Italy by end of year

Brussels, 25/11/2005 (Agence Europe) - An infringement procedure against Italy for the functioning of its banking system is becoming more likely. Already under consideration by Charlie McCreevy (EUROPE 9065), this procedure requires a letter of formal notice to be sent to the Italian authorities, which the Commissioner in charge of the Internal Market hopes to sign "before Christmas", his spokesperson confirmed on Friday.
