ETUC asks Italian Presidency to act to ensure European citizens do not lose interest in European project

Brussels, 19/09/2003 (Agence Europe) - During their meeting with the President of the European Council, Silvio Berlsuconi, in Rome on 18 September, a delegation from the European Trade Unions Congress (ETUC), led by its Secretary General John Monks, and its chairman, Candido Mendez, stressed the need to "speed up economic growth and employment in the EU with investment strategies based around sustainable development, qualifications, research and development" and to "bring in new measures to support social Europe", to prevent the citizens of Europe from losing interest in the European project. ETUC also asked for the new Constitution to contain provision for social dialogue and service of general interest. They also told Mr Berlusconi that ETUC is staging a major Eurodemonstration in Rome on 4 October.
