19/09/2003 (Agence Europe) - Europe "cannot sit doing nothing while the situation grows worse" in Cuba, Commissioner Chris Patten's spokesman, Diego de Ojeda, said. "It is better to cooperate to improve the situation of the island's population rather than wait for the regime to change", he explained, according to the Ansa agency. Former Presidents Vaclav Havel (Czech Republic), Lech Walesa (Poland), and Arpad Gonez (Hungary) published a joint letter on Thursday defining Fidel Castro's government as a "Stalinian regime" and called for a more severe EU approach toward it. "In the broad lines, we do not see any major differences between our approach to Cuba and the content of the letter", Diego de Ojeda said.
