EPP-ED and PES groups want compensation fund for victims of terrorism

Madrid, 19/09/2003 (Agence Europe) - The EPP-ED group at the European Parliament submitted, together with the PES, an amendment on the draft budget for the 2004 tax year, which aims to set up a pilot-programme for victims of terrorism. The objective of this programme, with an envelope of EUR 1 million, is to create a compensation fund for victims of terrorist acts. During the political sessions of the political groups on Monday-Friday in Madrid, Gerardo Galeote-Quecedo, the Chairman of the Spanish delegation of the EPP-ED explained that, "this is a modest amount but it has a significant political impact". Mr Galeote added that this EUR 1 million would only be for 2004 in an effort to launch the programme that would be developed over future years.
