Brussels, 15/02/2000 (Agence Europe) - The cyanide spill that has polluted the Danube region (see yesterday's EUROPE, page 14) reinforces the conviction of the WWF (Worldwide Fund for Nature) that metal mining activities are a major threat to freshwater ecosystems in Europe.
"This environmental disaster is just the latest in a series of accidents involving toxic mining waste", warns the WWF in a press release. The association regrets that the Commission has so far not acted on its appeals...
