On Thursday, 27 November, the S&D Group published its position on the future EU strategy for eradicating poverty by 2050, expected in 2026.
In a letter addressed to President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, S&D President Iratxe García Pérez of Spain expresses that she is pleased that, at the group’s request, emphasis is being placed on eradicating child poverty and strengthening the Child Guarantee among other issues.
“Eradicating poverty must be based on a commitment of redistributing resources and opportunities to ensure social justice, shared prosperity, gender equality, and the wellbeing of all people. This requires strengthening the governance system by ensuring that power lies in democratic institutions that act in the name of the people, and not in the hands of companies or the ultra-rich”.
S&D emphasises a series of principles: redirecting investments towards satisfying essential fundamental rights and needs; guaranteeing quality jobs and decent wages for all workers; protecting people against risks so as to prevent them from falling into poverty, notably by ensuring access to decent and affordable housing; developing just transitions based on environmental and social justice principles; building effective democratic systems for the many; and empowering the most vulnerable.
In 2024, 93.3 million people (21% of the EU’s population) were at risk of poverty or social exclusion, including 19.5 million children.
