On Thursday 27 November in Strasbourg, the European Parliament adopted by a majority of 519 votes to 3, with 57 abstentions, a resolution condemning “the ongoing persecution, mass displacement and systematic attacks” against the Rohingya Muslim population in Myanmar.
The resolution calls for efforts to ensure the “safe and dignified” return of the Rohingya population, and for the EU to play a leading role in mobilising international support for the Rohingya people.
Parliament also expressed alarm at the brutal methods of repression employed by the junta and condemned the coup d’état which took place on 1 February 2021.
In particular, it deplores the current crackdown by the Tatmadaw (Burmese armed forces) and the serious human rights violations committed against civilians, ethnic minorities and political opponents.
The resolution also condemns international players, in particular Russia and China, for their political, economic and military support for the Burmese junta.
