EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT PLENARY / Tanzania

European Parliament calls on European Commission to revise EU financial support envisaged for 2026

On Thursday 27 November, MEPs adopted, by a show of hands, a resolution opposing a draft implementing act from the European Commission under the ‘NDICI-Global Europe’ Regulation, which would allocate substantial EU funds to Tanzania in 2026.

In view of the violence that occurred in the country, both during and in the run-up to the last general elections, the European Parliament is calling on the Commission to withdraw its draft decision and to present a new proposal that takes account of the concerns raised, while ensuring that the new changes do not prejudice funding for Tanzanian NGOs and civil society.

On Thursday, the European Commission confirmed to Agence Europe that it had suspended the adoption of this decision. “The European Union is now seeking to discuss with Tanzania at political level how these events will be addressed by the Tanzanian government and to assess on which basis our close cooperation could continue after these events”, said a spokesperson.

The draft implementing decision falls within the comitology framework and is therefore not public, but the Parliament nevertheless has the right to object.
