03/11/2025 (Agence Europe) – ProtectDefenders.EU mechanism, European regulation on media freedom, Sakharov Prize for freedom of thought... The European Commission and the European Parliament are reiterating their support for the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, celebrated on Sunday 2 November. According to the Commission, ProtectDefenders.EU has supported 13,000 journalists under threat around the world since 2015 and the EU Media Freedom Regulation “introduced strong safeguards for media and journalists” in 2024. On Parliament’s side, the chairmen of the Subcommittee on Human Rights, Mounir Satouri (Greens/EFA, French), and the Special Committee on the European Shield for Democracy, Nathalie Loiseau (Renew Europe, French), point out that “crimes against journalists take many forms: harassment, intimidation, enforced disappearances and arbitrary detention”.
