COUNCIL OF EUROPE / Human rights

European Convention on Human Rights celebrates its 75th anniversary in difficult context

Signed in Rome in 1950 by twelve Council of Europe member states, the European Convention on Human Rights celebrates its 75th anniversary on Tuesday 4 November.

An official ceremony will be held at 18:00, and will be broadcast live on the Court’s YouTube channel.

The speakers will include: Mattias Guyomar, President of the Court, Alain Berset, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Myriam Spiteri Debono, President of the Republic of Malta, on behalf of the Committee of Ministers, and Theodoros Rousopoulos, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

The cornerstone of a common legal and political policy for human rights, democracy and the rule of law throughout Europe, the European Convention on Human Rights and the Court that oversees its application are now being called into question, particularly in relation to rulings on migration.

This issue, and that of the EU’s accession to the Convention, were discussed in an interview with Agence Europe last June by Mattias Guyomar (see EUROPE 13669/22). (see EUROPE 13669/22).
