On Thursday 9 October, European trade union leaders representing workers in the public energy, water and waste sectors adopted the ‘Ljubljana Declaration’, a call for public investment, fair jobs and democratic control of essential European services, according to a press release from the EPSU representing these sectors.
The ‘Ljubljana Declaration’ “demands a break from the decades of underinvestment and liberalisation that have left Europe’s public infrastructure fragile”.
It calls for “long-term public financing of water, energy and waste systems to guarantee universal access; binding social and labour standards in EU investment and climate packages; worker participation in digitalisation and AI governance to ensure transparency and human oversight; stronger health and safety protections in the face of new environmental and technological risks”.
