In the run-up to COP30 in Belém (Brazil) from 11 to 21 November, the European coalition of environmental NGOs CAN Europe has called on the EU to “urgently address the collective shortfall in global climate action”.
Referring to the negotiations on the EU’s ‘Nationally Determined Contribution’ (NDC), which sets a target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2035, the coalition said it was “very concerned” that the Union had not been able to meet the September deadline (see other news).
“Pressure is high on the EU to now conclude the discussions on a 2040 target and derive from that the 2035 NDC in the most ambitious manner”, insists CAN Europe.
However, environmental NGOs point out that the European Commission’s proposal, which sets a reduction target of 90% by 2040 (compared with 1990), taking into account international credits (see EUROPE 13672/2), “is not aligned with the EU’s fair share for 1.5°C”.
The coalition reiterates its commitment to achieving “domestic” carbon neutrality by 2040 at the latest and a target of reducing net national emissions by at least 94% by 2035.
