In a joint statement on Tuesday 9 September, on the eve of the State of the Union address by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, 470 organisations denounced what they called a deregulation campaign by the institution.
These organisations are critical of the fact that, since taking office nine months ago, the ‘Von der Leyen II’ Commission has embarked on “an unprecedented wave of drastic cuts to regulations that protect labour and social rights, human rights, digital rights, and the environment” under the guise of boosting European competitiveness.
In particular, the signatories deplore the fact that several legislative proposals have been made in haste, without an impact assessment, or using an urgent procedure, “which leaves no space for a democratic debate in the European Parliament”.
Among the signatories are the coalition of environmental NGOs CAN Europe, the Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO) and European Digital Rights (EDRi).
