03/02/25 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 3 February, the NGO ClientEarth said it was challenging the European Commission’s decision to drop transparency rules in the context of its Decision (EU) 2024/3080 of 4 December 2024 amending Decision C(2000)3614, preventing the public from accessing documents relating to ongoing dossiers. ClientEarth, which believes that the Commission is “in blatant breach of EU law”, has filed a complaint. Ilze Tralmaka, ClientEarth’s lawyer, regretted that “instead of opening up, the European Commission has chosen to hide more and more information”. The NGO explains that “members of the public could be denied access to documents such as draft impact assessments or legal opinions when the EU institutions are debating new laws”. The NGO stressed the need for NGOs to have access to documents in order to “participate in democratic decision-making”. (FS)
