Employing more women in the transport sector is essential to progress towards greener, safer and more efficient transport systems, according to a report prepared jointly by the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the International Transport Forum (ITF) on Friday 31 January.
At 12% of the workforce in the sector, women are largely underrepresented worldwide. This underrepresentation limits the diversity of perspectives in service design and decision-making, adversely affects businesses and undermines economic growth. Unfavourable workplace policies and significant gender gaps in operational, technical and managerial roles are barriers to women’s employment in the sector.
The report makes recommendations in the following areas: - attraction and recruitment; - human resource policies and practices; - retention, career development and leadership; - legal and policy framework; - data collection and research.
