03/02/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 3 February, the OpenEuroLLM project, which is developing large open linguistic models using artificial intelligence, covering all the official and future languages of the EU, received the ‘STEP’ label from the European Commission. It is the first project funded by the Digital Europe Programme to receive this label, which aims to strengthen European industrial competitiveness by supporting critical technologies, including AI. OpenEuroLLM has a budget of €37.4 million, including €20.6 million funded by the Digital Europe Programme. It brings together start-ups, research laboratories and European supercomputer centres to train its AI models. To qualify for the ‘STEP’ label, projects must bring innovative, cutting-edge technology with significant economic potential to the single market, or contribute to reducing or preventing the EU’s strategic dependencies.
